Case Study - Bharat Airways
Bharat Airways (BA), a five-year old Indian domestic airline was launched with the promise of operating prompt and efficient services and consumer satisfaction, among other things. In the first year, they got very good response from the passengers because of their commitment to quality and service; however, due to reshuffling of some of the key top management executives, BA lost its predetermined focus. During the last four years of their operation, BA degenerated into a chaotic and haphazard organization. As a consequence, the conditions became worse resulting in large number of dis-satisfied travellers, switching over to the other better airlines.
‘Bharat airways’ was not experienced in the domestic Air Travel business when it started. Although it recruited almost 50% of its important employees out of 800 employees from other competitor airlines, there was no training to any group of employees. Employees had lot of grievances and there was no procedure, system and method to ventilate the grievances. The top management and the operating managers were following autocratic style of management. The autocratic style created fear, stress and unhealthy atmosphere in the company. The relationship between the leaders and subordinate was very poor. Employees complained many occasion about the presence of high discrimination. Employees were terminated, threatened and punished for silly reasons which lead to high employee turnover and made the work environment very stressful for the employees. Communication at levels was poor and there was absence of mutual trust, responsibility and accountability. Senior staff often complained of lack of coordination and in case of problem the ‘buck’ was passed to someone else conveniently. This resulted in lack of responsibility at all levels. Sometimes chaotic situations arose because of lack of communication. The current management has huge responsibility of figuring out the possible solution to solve this problem.

1. Evaluate the case and discuss with justifications, the plan of action you suggest for ‘Bharath Airways’ to come out of this turmoil.
2. You have been asked to find out the root causes of the problems. How will you conduct research to find out the root causes? Discuss your plan for collection of data, type of data and the type of sampling you may use in this research.
3. Based on the understanding of the case and what you have learnt from the text books, discuss the transactional and transformational style of leadership and justify which is the best suited for Bharath Airways?
4. As a Human Resource Management of the Bharath Airways, discuss the various important steps you may immediately take to improve the situation of the organization.
5. Based on the understanding of marketing chapter explain, how will you implement 7 P’s of marketing mix to make Bharath Airways a successful organization?
