Obesity: The Gene–Environment Interaction and its Implications
البدانة : بين تفاعل الجينات مع البيئة و آثارها

9th - 12th May 2010,Melville Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Obesity is widely regarded as being the most serious health threat facing the western world. In the last decade this problem has spread into developing countries and become a true pandemic. Fundamental biological studies have clearly established that there is a strong genetic basis to obesity susceptibility. Yet, it is also clear that there are large environmental effects at play. Obesity is consequently the result of a complex gene by environment interaction. This fact is seldom addressed by research communities who tend to work either on the genetics/physiology or the environment side of the problem.
Moreover, when it comes to treatment options these inevitably focus only on the environmental aspects. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the two sides of the obesity research community – those working on the genetics/physiology side and those focusing more on environmental issues, with a view to discussing how research on each side of the divide may facilitate activity on the opposite side to gain new insights into the problem. On the last day of the workshop the delegates will address the practical consequences of gene-environment nature of obesity and what implications this fact has for how we treat obesity.

7th Euro-Maghreb Workshop on Evolution Equations
30.04.2010: Registration deadline
15.05.2010: Deadline of submission of abstracts
Annaba, May 30th June 3rd, 2010

The Department of Mathematics of the Science Faculty of the University Badji Mokhtar of Annaba, in collaboration with the Applied Mathematics Laboratory of Annaba will organize the 7th Euro-Maghreb Workshop on Evolution Equations.

Evolution equations are involved in a wide spectrum of sciences: physics, biology, economy. Several teams in Europe and Maghreb work in this large domain of mathematics from abstract approaches connected to other domains such as control theory, spectral analysis, operator theory up to applications to biology, economy... The 7th Euro-Maghreb Workshop on Evolution Equations will be devoted to recent advances on Evolution Equations and connected domains, as well as initiate young researchers from Maghreb and Europe to these domains and challenging open problems. Through this workshop, research cooperation and exchanges betwen countries from Europe and Maghreb will be reenforced and common interests and initiation of young researchers developped through mini-courses and conferences. Junior researchers as well as more senior ones will also have the opportunity to present their new results during thirty minutes talks. The previous editions of this bi-annual workshop were organized at Marrakech (Morocco) in 1999, l'Aquila (Italy) in 2000, Marrakech in 2002, Freudenstadt (Germany) in 2004, Hammamet (Tunisia) in 2006 and Marseille (France) in 2008.

11th International Symposium on Multiscale, Multifunctional and Functionally Graded Materials

EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: 7th May 2010

Multiscale, Multifunctional and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are multi-phase materials in which the structure and/or chemical composition is manipulated at different scales (from micro- to nano-scale or below) in order to provide a non-uniform but controlled distribution of the different phases. The intention is to confer to a single component a spatial, dimensional or even time-dependent variation in properties, with the ultimate intent of achieving multi-functionality.
This is, by nature, a multi-disciplinary field of work, in which scientists with backgrounds coming from all fields of Engineering, but also from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and others are involved.
Furthermore, industry interest in this challenging field is high, because new applications are continuously being discovered and developed, adding to those already existing in the biomedical, biomechanical, automotive, aerospace, energy, mechanical, civil, nuclear, and naval engineering fields.
This international symposium, the 11th in the series, will be held 20 years after the historic meeting held in Japan, when the FGM was given international recognition. It will be a major forum which will provide all the world’s researchers and industrials with an interest in these fields with ample opportunities for exchanging, discussing and enhancing state-of-art techniques and most recent developments.
The Local Organizing Committee wishes to welcome you all to this exciting symposium and to the historical city of Guimarães, where Portugal was born!
