11th International Symposium on Multiscale, Multifunctional and Functionally Graded Materials
EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: 7th May 2010
Multiscale, Multifunctional and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are multi-phase materials in which the structure and/or chemical composition is manipulated at different scales (from micro- to nano-scale or below) in order to provide a non-uniform but controlled distribution of the different phases. The intention is to confer to a single component a spatial, dimensional or even time-dependent variation in properties, with the ultimate intent of achieving multi-functionality.
This is, by nature, a multi-disciplinary field of work, in which scientists with backgrounds coming from all fields of Engineering, but also from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and others are involved.
Furthermore, industry interest in this challenging field is high, because new applications are continuously being discovered and developed, adding to those already existing in the biomedical, biomechanical, automotive, aerospace, energy, mechanical, civil, nuclear, and naval engineering fields.
This international symposium, the 11th in the series, will be held 20 years after the historic meeting held in Japan, when the FGM was given international recognition. It will be a major forum which will provide all the world’s researchers and industrials with an interest in these fields with ample opportunities for exchanging, discussing and enhancing state-of-art techniques and most recent developments.
The Local Organizing Committee wishes to welcome you all to this exciting symposium and to the historical city of Guimarães, where Portugal was born!
