Linear Algebra With Applications
by W. Keith Nicholson
511FSSXWT1L.jpg

Editorial Reviews

Book Description
This successful text is an introduction to the basic ideas and techniques of linear algebra for first- or second-year students who have a working knowledge of high school algebra (calculus is not a prerequisite). The author maintains a balance among the computational skills, theory, and applications of linear algebra--while keeping the level suitable for beginning students--and offers a multitude of examples and exercises to help students master the material.

Linear Algebra and Its Applications
by Gilbert Strang
41ZKFGHXD9L.jpg

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
With a highly applied and computational focus, this book combines the important underlying theory with examples from electrical engineering, computer science, physics, biology and economics. An expanded list of computer codes in an appendix and more computer-solvable exercises in the text reflect Strang?s interest in computational linear algebra. Many exercises appear in the sections and in the chapter reviews. Exercises are simple but instructive.

About the Author
Gilbert Strang is Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College. He was an undergraduate at MIT and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His doctorate was from UCLA and since then he has taught at MIT. He has been a Sloan Fellow and a Fairchild Scholar and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Strang has published a monograph with George Fix, "An Analysis of the Finite Element Method", and has authored six widely used textbooks. He served as President of SIAM during 1999 and 2000 and he is Chair of the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics for 2003-2004.

A Transition to Advanced Mathematics
by Randall Maddox
51KMC7426JL.jpg

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The ability to construct proofs is one of the most challenging aspects of the world of mathematics. It is, essentially, the defining moment for those testing the waters in a mathematical career. Instead of being submerged to the point of drowning, readers of Mathematical Thinking and Writing are given guidance and support while learning the language of proof construction and critical analysis.

Randall Maddox guides the reader with a warm, conversational style, through the task of gaining a thorough understanding of the proof process, and encourages inexperienced mathematicians to step up and learn how to think like a mathematician. A student's skills in critical analysis will develop and become more polished than previously conceived. Most significantly, Dr. Maddox has the unique approach of using analogy within his book to clarify abstract ideas and clearly demonstrate methods of mathematical precision.

Book Info
Textbook designed to help college students adjust to the abstract mathematical thought used to construct concise and correct proofs. Shows how to communicate with precision, methodically building toward an understanding of the proof process. For those going on to study in algebra or analysis.

Product Description

This top-selling, theorem-proof book presents a careful treatment of the principle topics of linear algebra, and illustrates the power of the subject through a variety of applications. It emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between linear transformations and matrices, but states theorems in the more general infinite-dimensional case where appropriate. Chapter topics cover vector spaces, linear transformations and matrices, elementary matrix operations and systems of linear equations, determinants, diagonalization, inner product spaces, and canonical forms. For statisticians and engineers.
The publisher, Prentice-Hall Engineering/Science/Mathematics
An accessible, applications-oriented presentation of the theory of linear algebra. This is the top selling theorem-proof text in the market. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Number Theory for Computing
by Song Y. Yan (Author), M.E. Hellmann
41egmlkVEAL.jpg

Editorial Reviews
Review
From the reviews of the second edition:

"This book gives a profound and detailed insight at an undergraduate level in abstract and computational number theory as well as in applications in computing and cryptography. The author has done a lot of work in providing a plenty of examples, in adding many historical comments including sketchy biographies and in presenting the whole topic in a very accessible style. So the book can be recommended warmly for the laymen as well as for the mathematician without experience in applied number theory." (G. Kowol, Monatshefte für Mathematik, Vol. 140 (4), 2003)

Product Description
There are many surprising connections between the theory of numbers, which is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, and computing and information theory. Number theory has important applications in computer organization and security, coding and cryptography, random number generation, hash functions, and graphics. Conversely, number theorists use computers in factoring large integers, determining primes, testing conjectures, and solving other problems. This book takes the reader from elementary number theory, via algorithmic number theory, to applied number theory in computer science. It introduces basic concepts, results, and methods, and discusses their applications in the design of hardware and software, cryptography, and security. It is aimed at undergraduates in computing and information technology, but will also be valuable to mathematics students interested in applications. In this 2nd edition full proofs of many theorems are added and some corrections are made.

Handbook of Number Theory I
by József Sándor (Author), Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic (Author), Borislav Crstici
41X730B4PNL.jpg

Product Description

This handbook covers a wealth of topics from number theory, special attention being given to estimates and inequalities. As a rule, the most important results are presented, together with their refinements, extensions or generalisations. These may be applied to other aspects of number theory, or to a wide range of mathematical disciplines. Cross-references provide new insight into fundamental research.
Audience: This is an indispensable reference work for specialists in number theory and other mathematicians who need access to some of these results in their own fields of research.
