First Question: (40 marks-400 words)
In 2008, Nike spent an enormous amount of money more than a billion of dollars on marketing activities including marketing research and promotional activities. Nike is moving from one product to the other, from designing the traditional football shoes to athletic shoes. However, recently entered that field after Sketchers, Nike wants to increase its share of athletic shoes. Nike needs to understand who wears athletic shoes and how it is used and when it is used. Moreover, Nike wants to know what differentiate other athletic shoes in the market.
Required:
1. Explain how levels of research design could be applied to Nike case. (10 marks)
2. The problem is approached through three main researches; exploratory, descriptive and causal or explanatory. (15 marks)
a. Explain the differences between each of these types. Give examples on each type to support your answer.
b. Suggest the most appropriate type of research that fit Nike case.
3. Quantitative and qualitative data could help in answering Nike reserch problem. In light of this : (15 marks)
a. Explain the differences between qualitative and quantitative research.
b. Explain how qualitative research could be used in answering Nike problem. Give examples on qualitative research tools that could be used in the given case to support your answer.
Second Question: (35 marks- 300 words)
A Telecommunication company is thinking of developing its distribution channels; call centers and branches as a means of improving services to its customers. The development of this call center will cost one milliard of pounds. This calls for careful thinking and prior research before the approval of this investment proposal.
Required:
1. Explain the differences between primary data and secondary data. (15 marks)
2. Primary data could help in evaluating of the feasibility of this investment proposal, from the marketing perspective. Give examples on primary data collection tools that might help in this case and explain how this primary data could be used in this situation. (10 marks)
3. Suggest and justify the secondary data that could help in evaluating the feasibility of this investment proposal from the marketing perspective. (10 marks)

Third Question: (25 marks – 300 words)
1. Quantitative research is widely used in marketing studies, although it involves time and money to implement. Explain the differences among face- to- face interview methods, self- completion methods and telephone interviews in conducting quantitative researches. (15 marks)
2. Souq.com, an e-retailer is interested in a study to evaluate the effect of its social media advertisements on consumer awareness with its services and intention to buy its products.
Recommend the method(s) of data collection that most fits this case. You need to justify your choice. (10 marks)

Question

Explain how has English gained its international status in the world today. Draw on the several venues of communication requiring English and the discussion in U214 Book One.

Areas of Discussion

Areas of discussing the TMA’s topic are related to U214A Course Book One English in the World, and particularly Unit 1, and DVD1, clips 1.1; 1.2 and 1.3.

Important Guidelines

Discussing the TMA’s subject matter has to draw on the following ideas:
1. Explain what is English drawing on communities where English is used as the national language and the way English is used around the world (5 pts)
2. The reasons why English is associated with technical and scientific communication (5pts)
3. The reasons why English is associated with education and employment (5 pts)
4. The extent to which English is open to change and the emergence of world Englishes (5pts)
N.B. Students need to read in – depth Unit 1 and think about the TMA questions as they read. Students need to listen to DVD1, clips 1.1; 1.2 and 1.3 and take notes relating to the TMA question. When writing, students need to pay attention to structure, layout and correct language and use appropriate referencing and citation.

Introduction
This TMA has one question with three sub sections. You should answer them all. The questions in this assignment are all about different aspects of the process of exploring a complex situation.

Question 1 (100% marks)

You are strongly advised to use the AOU e-library to locate additional relevant resources which can support your analysis and argument. This will earn you extra points.

(a) Read through the attached article “VW scandal: corporate shakeout and economic crisis”, as you read through the article, create one Spray diagram to summarize the different ideas of the article respecting the conventions, and techniques. It is advised that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words. (15 Marks)

(b) Based on what you learned in T205A (T552/Diagramming), and on the content of the article, draw a System Map diagram to show all the components of the “VW scandal”. The system map should include all the components of the system paying special attention to the grouping and the hierarchy. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words (15 Marks)

(c) Using an essay format (one essay with different sub-sections), and based on what you learned in T205A concept file 02, and T551 Linear Programming:
1- Analyze the type of situations discussed in the case; justify your answer based on what you learned in T551 linear programing (Word Count 400; 10 Marks).
2- Discuss the different ways of thinking presented in T551 Linear programing and assess how applying each of the three ways of thinking (causal, logical, and reductionist) can enlighten our understanding of the VW problem. (Word Count 500; 15 Marks).
3- Assess how different worldviews, perspectives, and mental models, can interact to create the problems at VW. (Word Count 400; 15 Marks).
4- Assess how the issue of power (visible and invisible) within the organization might have also contributed to the emission problem at VW. (Word Count 250, 10 Marks).
5- Conflict is an essential part of organizational life and is at the heart of many organizational problems; assess the conflict generating mechanisms at play at VW as discussed in T205A concept file 02, and whether it was allowed to surface or not. (300 words, 10 Marks).
6- Analyze how and whether applying the systems approach to the problem in the case can improve and enlighten understanding (Word Count 350; 10 Marks).

TMA Guidance to students

(a) Note that the submission for this question requires your rough spray diagrams, and a condensed or tided up version. You should do your best to follow the conventions for the spray diagram as explained in T552. It is also important that the diagram communicates to your tutor, so make sure the writing is legible and not too small. However, don't redraw your initial rough spray diagrams just to tidy them up; we want to see what you drew as you worked. You need to identify the main idea of the article and include it within your central topic, and then identify the most important points and include them within the subtopics blobs then branch out as explained in T552 appendix (A1.1.)

(b) Here you are required to draw a system map, which includes all the relevant components of the “US Health Care System” as discussed in the case without neglecting the assumptions. Your tutor’s feedback will be helpful in clarifying to you any misconceptions you might have about drawing the diagram and it will also help in assessing your diagramming skills.

(c) Here you are required to draw back on concepts learned in T551 and Concept file 02 (as relevant) in order to analyze the questions. Please remember that for each section you need to provide a clear theoretical discussion, and then explain how those concepts are applied in the case on hand. Again you are strongly advised to use your own words to discuss the concepts as you understood them. Do not copy material from the books since it will have a negative impact on your grade, and very importantly do not get consumed in a purely theoretical analysis without assessing how these concepts are applied in the case study. Make sure to respect the word count as it is an indicator to you of the depth of analysis required. Please remember that failure to paraphrase, and to reference will also lead to failing the TMA.

There are different ways to tackle and structure your ideas. Please remember that your work should be structured in an essay format with a clear introduction, then possibly different subsections (as needed) to assess each idea and a conclusion.
The introduction should set out the topic of the discussion clearly. For each of the body paragraphs/sub-sections you need to provide a clear theoretical discussion which explains how the relevant course concepts are related to the article on hand. The conclusion should summarize your findings and reflect on your learning. You should not write in the first person (i.e. I think), the third person is more appropriate for college level writing (i.e. we can conclude), but in any case it is preferable to avoid both styles and to state your argument (i.e. instead of saying “this essay will tackle the ways of thinking and the systems thinking approach”, you can start with a statement about system’s thinking in organizations). Similarly in your conclusion you should not use “it could be concluded”, rather simply restate the main points and your findings.

I. TMA Topic overview: Supply Chain Management
A supply chain consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, in fulfilling a customer request. The supply chain not only includes the manufacturers and suppliers, but also transporters, warehouses, retailers and customers themselves. Within each organization, such as manufacturing, the supply chain includes all functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request. These functions include, but are not limited to, new product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance, and customer service.
The objective of every supply chain is to maximize the overall value generated. The value of a supply chain generates is the difference between what the final product is worth to the customer and the effort the supply chain expends in filling the customer’s request.
II. Discussion Question (for essay paper and PowerPoint presentation)
Think about a product of a specific brand that you have recently bought. Write an essay and prepare a PowerPoint presentation to discuss the supply network of this product from raw material until it arrives to the consumers. You are required to cover the following points in your essay/presentation:
1. Industry overview, company overview, product overview, major competitors.
2. Stages of the product supply chain or network design, location of raw material in relation to the manufacturer, distributor, retailer and consumer, etc.
3. The relationship between suppliers and customers (first tier, second tier, etc.., horizontal or vertical integration (if any), levels of inventory and where it’s held.
4. The overall cost structure of the product, average profit margins, etc.
5. Explanation of any problems and suggestions for further improvements of the supply chain.
III. TMA Requirements


This TMA consists of 20% of your total course grade. It is a team project. Each team will consist of 4-5 students. The project is divided into two parts:
1. TMA essay paper (50 marks out of 100)
2. PowerPoint presentation (50 marks out of 100)

• Teams of the same session should select different products to discuss for this project. Students should arrange with their tutors in order to verify that no other team had selected the same product for the project.

1. TMA Essay Paper (50 marks out of 100)

• Each team will work on the TMA paper as they would normally do with other courses, but this time in group. This is a good opportunity for students to learn a set of skills that are very important in the professional business world, such as time management, planning, communicating with others, etc..
• Each team is required to select a team leader. The TMA paper should be uploaded to the LMS by the team leader only. This is a very important requirement in order to avoid Turnitin similarities.

2. PowerPoint Presentation (50 marks out of 100)

• Each team will prepare a PowerPoint presentation that reflects on the most important points discussed in the paper.
• Each team will be allowed a total of 20 minutes. 12-15 minutes for the presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A and discussion.
• All team members should contribute equally. Each member should speak for approximately 3 minutes. The last team member to speak should lead a class discussion.
• Team members will be marked based on the “Team presentation evaluation form”. Team members are advised to use this form as a baseline for preparing the presentation.
• Team members will receive the same mark on the PowerPoint presentation, given they have shown up and participated in the presentation. Team members who don’t show up or participate in the presentation will receive a zero on the presentation part.
• Balanced participation in the presentation is one of the requirements mentioned in the presentation marking rubric.

About TMA:
The TMA covers the management accounting concepts and practices in the businesses. It is marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of the overall assessment component. It is intended to assess students’ understanding of some of the learning points within units 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 beside the supplementary material. This TMA requires you to apply the course concepts. The TMA is intended to:
 Assess students’ understanding of key learning points within units 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.
 Increase the students’ knowledge about the reality of the Managerial Accounting as a profession.

The TMA:
This TMA is based around one case of “NIDEC Corporation Annual Report for the year ended March 31, 2014” & also questions on budgeting and breakeven analysis. Marks will be awarded for blending the context of the case with relevant theory by means of your own interpretation. In addition to this, some research is required.
The TMA requires you to:
1- Review various study sessions beside the supplementary materials.
2- Conduct a simple information search using the internet.
3- Present your findings in not more than 2,000 words ± 10%.
4- You should use a Microsoft Office Word and Times New Roman Font of 12 points.

1- Is Nidec’s Annual Report primarily a financial accounting document or a managerial accounting document? What evidence supports your conclusion?

2- "Value chain refers to the sequence of business functions in which customer usefulness is added to products or services of a company". Provide evidence of management concerns about the value chain.

Wendy’s International, Inc.

Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers was considered the third largest fast-food hamburger business in the world, although it reported higher revenues in 2002 than did Burger King. The company as a whole generated $2.73 billion in revenues in 2002, up 14.2 percent from the previous year. With headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, the corporation operated over 9,000 restaurants in 33 countries worldwide.

‘Vertical Integration Strategies extend a firm’s competitive and operating scope within the same basic industry. It involves expanding the firm’s range of activities backward into sources of supply and/or forward towards end users.’ Thompson A.A et al (2005); Crafting and Executing Strategy; p. 150.

Choose an organization and discuss in a well-written essay of around 500 words, how it has used vertical integration strategies, either backward and/or forward, to strengthen its competitive position within its industry.

Trust is essential for successful collaboration. However, nowadays it is considered a rare commodity where misuse of power, hostility between members, suspicion and mistrust are more common.
A. Based on B325 material, define what is meant by “trust” and critically discuss how trust can be built over time in collaborative ventures.
B. With reference to the study in hand, identify the role of trust for the joint ventures. Critically discuss the extent to which trust was highlighted in the study and explain the main outcomes of trust/mistrust. Support your answer with examples from the study.

I. TMA Topic overview: Working Environments


The best companies to work for around the world are places where employees are excited to go to every day. Every year, business magazines like Fortune and Forbes have lists of the best companies to work for. These lists are based on certain criteria related to the working environments of these companies.

II. Discussion Question (for essay paper and PowerPoint presentation)

Select an organization known to be a good place to work for. Discuss the reasons that make this organization such a great place to work. In your discussion, elaborate on the culture, leadership, career development, motivation, engagement and retention strategies followed by this organization.



III. TMA Requirements


This TMA consists of 20% of your total course grade. It is a team project. Each team will consist of 4-5 students. The project is divided into two parts:
1. TMA essay paper (50 marks out of 100)
2. PowerPoint presentation (50 marks out of 100)

• Teams of the same session should select different organization to discuss for this project. Students should arrange with their tutors in order to verify that no other team had selected the same organization for the project.

1. TMA Essay Paper (50 marks out of 100) (1500 words)

• The cut-off date to upload the essay paper to the LMS is December 15, 2015.
• Each team will work on the TMA paper as they would normally do with other courses, but this time in group. This is a good opportunity for students to learn a set of skills that are very important in the professional business world, such as time management, planning, communicating with others, etc..
• Each team is required to select a team leader. The TMA paper should be uploaded to the LMS by the team leader only. This is a very important requirement in order to avoid Turnitin similarities.
• The names of all the team members should be written on the pt3 form, including the name of the team leader. All team members will receive the same mark on the TMA essay paper. Students are required to use the pt3 form provided on the LMS for this specific TMA.


2. PowerPoint Presentation (50 marks out of 100)

• Each team will prepare a PowerPoint presentation that reflects on the most important points discussed in the paper.
• Each team will be allowed a total of 20 minutes. 12-15 minutes for the presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A and discussion.
• All team members should contribute equally. Each member should speak for approximately 3 minutes. The last team member to speak should lead a class discussion.
• Team members will be marked based on the “Team presentation evaluation form”. Team members are advised to use this form as a baseline for preparing the presentation.
• Team members will receive the same mark on the PowerPoint presentation, given they have shown up and participated in the presentation. Team members who don’t show up or participate in the presentation will receive a zero on the presentation part.
• Balanced participation in the presentation is one of the requirements mentioned in the presentation marking rubric.

Format and Word Count:
The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
Writing and Discussion Topic:
Famous artists (painters, musicians, etc.) have established reputations. These reputations are far from being uniform, with each of these figures having more than one “reputation”. Moreover, the process of reputation construction/formation is far from being a simple and straightforward process as very little is involved in investigating the sources and accuracy of reputations. History is full of artists whose reputations in their days and in later days are much contested. Choose one such artist and provide a study of his/her reputation and the issues involved in its making. Note that the artist should not be among those covered in Book 1. First, you should read to build your understanding of the complex theme of reputation before focusing your attention on material that would help you address the subthemes numbered 1-5 below, as they apply to your artist of choice:
1) Highlight the issues involved in setting the chosen artist in his/her historical context.

2) Discuss how issues of historical interpretation affected the construction of the chosen artist’s reputation.

3) Comment on the issues involved in using historical evidence appropriately as far as the reputation construction of the chosen artist is concerned.

4) Investigate how social values/norms impact the reputation construction of this artist.

5) Reflect on how views on tradition and innovation relate to the chosen artist’s work and his/her reputation(s).

The Voices and Texts of Authority
This assignment relates to Book 1 (chapter 3) of the course and carries 20 marks. There are two parts to the question and both must be answered together in an essay form in around 1200 words.
Question
"One of the notable feature of Homeric poetry, important to the theme of authority, is the Homeric similes---" Discuss how the poet has used various devices to add authority with specific reference to Book 22 (lines 166 - 265)
Also, choose a stanza of at least eight lines from the work of any one poet of your choice, quote the lines and explain how this poet has used various devices to add beauty and value to his poem.
Student Guidance
In answering this question:
Discuss briefly the concept of authority in literature and discuss how works of different authors become authoritative with clear illustration/ examples. (6 points)
Read closely chapter 3 of Book 1 ‘Homer’s Iliad: Book 22 lines 166 to 265, and reflect upon the various devices used by Homer that give this master piece "authority". (6 points)
Spend enough time to read poetry by different authors, and choose the poet who impressed you with the use of different devices. Introduce and explain the poem briefly, quote the stanza which must not be less than eight lines and analyze/explain how various devices have been used by the poet in the lines of your choice. (6 points)
Conclude the essay on why and how poetry is an important tool of expression. (2 points)
The essay cannot be in one single paragraph and is not restricted to four. Ensure you acknowledge all the sources.

GlaxoSmithKline: Successful Internal Innovation
A firm may pursue new technology in two principal ways: internally, through research and development, or externally, by purchasing the technology. Each activity has benefits and drawbacks, and each takes different skills. Therefore, a firm like Cisco or GlaxoSmithKline may have both internal and external development efforts; the firm typically will develop greater skill in one area than the other. For example, Cisco’s competitive advantage has come from obtaining technology from external activities, in particular, through a large number of acquisitions each year.

Part 1:Symmetric encryption
