In writing this book we have aimed at producing a concise introduction to statistical mechanics suitable for students pursuing an Honours course in Physics or Mathematics. The basic method used for the treatment is the ensemble method, introduced by a modification of the Darwin-Fowler method, which we feel has not been given sufficient attention as a basis for undergraduate courses.
