Assisting the public to become informed consumers of health care is as much a part of health care service as the care giving. Rehabilitative subacute care delivery is a good example. In the past, when an individual had a serious health event, one that required hospitalization, it used to be common for that individual to remain in the hospital for an extended period of recovery. This is no longer the case. Recent health care reform has resulted in shorter hospital stays. Once a health problem is diagnosed and stabilized, if an individual needs a period of physical rehabilitation, those services are now provided as rehabilitative subacute care or short-term rehabilitation. At the same time that hospital stays are becoming shorter, the public is being told that they need to play a more active role in maintaining their health. Patients/clients must now be knowledgeable health care consumers. The video presentation, Short-term Rehabilitation: Recovery in Progress, can assist both health care consumers and health care providers in keeping up to date on the process of subacute care delivery.
