Although this text is intended s the bsis of a one-semester lecture course in thermodynamics and similar topics as they pertain to metallurgy, some problems and illustrative examples are included to form a basis for dssroom discussion. Detailed treatment of practical appiicatinn is, however, kept to a minnum primarily because such material becomes rapidly dated and is, therefore, most readily expendable in restraining the text to a finite length. Although my initial intent was to provide a reference text for first-year graduate students in metallurgy, the text presupposes no particular background on the part of the reader and could well be of interest to advanced undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines such s metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and physics.
