The History of Allelopathy

R.J. Willis, "The History of Allelopathy"
Springer | 2007-12-06 | ISBN: 140204092X | 322 pages | PDF | 7,9 MB

Allelopathy is the study of the chemical interactions of plants. This concept has been known since antiquity, and first appears unambiguously in written form in about 350 B.C. in the works of Theophrastus. This book provides a detailed account of the concept of allelopathy as it has occured through the course of botanical literature from the earliest recorded writings to the modern era.
In the ancient world, the negative and positive interaction of plants was expressed within the framework of antipathy and sympathy of things. As such, antipathy and sympathy were more widely understood than generally appreciated, and indeed were assimilated in aspects of culture outside of botany and agriculture.
This book firstly addresses the question of what is allelopathy, as allelopathy is one of these unfortunate terms in ecology that has no unified definition. The book then examines the major episodes in the history of allelopathy: the writings from classical Greece and Rome; mediaeval Arabic, Indian and Chinese work; the advent of printing and promulgation of information in the 16th and 17th centuries; the 18th century and the theory of root excretion; the 19th century and the influence of A.P. de Candolle; the early 20th century and the work of Pickering and the USDA Bureau of Soils; and the years leading to the current era.
The work draws extensively on original sources, and consequently many of the assertions published in relation to the background of allelopathy, are shown to be incorrect, or at best very inadequate. There is a great deal of information presented, in a consolidated or accessible form, for the first time. The book endeavours to set the history of allelopathy within both a scientific and sociological context.

Francisco A. Macias, Juan C.G. Galindo , Jose M. G. Molinillo, "Allelopathy: Chemistry and Mode of Action of Allelochemicals"
CRC; 1 edition (September 25, 2003) | ISBN:0849319641 | 392 pages | PDF | 4,9 Mb

Review
I found that new ideas for my ongoing research were triggered by the contents of the book. [R]eaders will benefit greatly by applying many practical techniques and insights presented in this book . Accordingly, I strongly recommend that scientists and graduate students worldwide, who are doing research on allelopathy, read the book. Finally, I would like to congratulate the editors for publishing such a valuable book. I believe that the book will catalyze more scientists to focus on the chemistry of allelopathy, and it will stimulate interdisciplinary scientists to join this research field.
- Journal of Environmental Quality, Vol. 34, July-Aug. 2005

Book Description
Most, if not all, books on allelopathy cover the ecological, agronomic, and descriptive physiological aspects. And although the amount of papers published on the chemical aspects and mode of action of these compounds continues to rise, there has been, until now, no book available that reflects the latest literature. Written by experts, Allelopathy: Chemistry and Mode of Action of Allelochemicals is the first book to focus on the chemical phenomena of allelopathy. The book discusses the chemicals responsible for the allelopathic phenomena and, closely connected with them, the modes of action of these compounds in the plant. Each chapter is dedicated to a single class of compounds and contains either a methods section describing how to perform the bioassays or references to the appropriate literature. The methods covered include first-line technologies such as proteomic techniques applied to allelopathic studies. Where other books on this subject highlight the "fuzzier" aspects, this one covers the hard science. It explores the latest developments in the field, discusses structure-activity relationships and SAR studies, and provides a foundation for the development of new natural herbicides. Designed as a practical, bench-friendly book, Allelopathy: Chemistry and Mode of Action of Allelochemicals is a convenient, easy-to-use resource that puts the latest information within easy reach.

Allelochemicals: Biological Control of Plant Pathogens and Diseases

Allelochemicals: Biological Control of Plant Pathogens and Diseases
Springer | ISBN: 1402044453 | 2006-06-15 | PDF | 214 pages | 1.6 Mb | RS

Biological control of plant diseases and plant pathogens is of great significance in forestry and agriculture. There is great incentive to discover biologically active natural products from higher plants that are better than synthetic agrochemicals and are much safer, from a health and environmental point-of-view. The development of natural products such as herbicides, fungicides, and their role in biological control of plant diseases, indicates a reduction in environmental and health hazards. Allelopathic techniques offer a real future in solving several problems, for instance biological control of plant pests. This book is organized around the indication that allelochemicals can be employed for biological control of plant pathogens and plant diseases. Specifically, this volume focuses on (i) discovery and development of natural product based fungicides for agriculture, (ii) direct use of allelochemicals as well as indirect effects through cover crops and organic amendments for plant parasitic pest control and (iii) application of allelopathy in pest management.

World Spice Plants: Economic Usage, Botany, Taxonomy
592 pages | Springer; 1 edition (July 21, 2005) | ISBN-10: 3540222790 | PDF | 51 Mb

Despite their long tradition spices are subject to international modern scientific research. This has made it necessary to disseminate knowledge to a large audience of interest. The book addresses this need by informing the reader about the complex worldwide use of spice plants.

The many spice and aromatic plants are arranged in alphabetical order of their botanical relevance. It includes all species which have been cultivated for the above purposes. It also covers species whose usage has long ceased or which are used only rarely or have become wild. In this respect the author has aimed at comprehensiveness. In total over 1400 plants have been collated.

The very extensive register of literature has been designed to facilitate intensive study of a specific plant or spice. Works both on botany and agriculture, and on chemistry, pharmacodynamics and usage have been considered.

The book is aimed principally at spice and aroma experts, pharmacists, botanists and interested lay persons. But the author also had in mind food chemists, dieticians and agricultural scientists, for whom botany, chemistry and pharmacological aspects may be of interest. It is hoped that those occupied in the spice and aroma industry involved in creating spice blends and the like will also take inspiration from the book.
