Data Networks, LAN and Internetworking
Module Description
This course introduces the various protocols and technologies used in data
networks both in Local and Wide-Area environments.
You will learn about the basics of WANs, including common WAN technologies,
types of wide-area services, encapsulation formats, and link options. You also
will learn about WAN devices protocols and most widely used standards such
as Frame Relay and ATM.
Problems in a Local Area Networks (LAN) and possible solutions that can
improve LAN performance are also discussed. You will learn about LAN basic
technologies, congestion and its effect on network performance and the
advantages of LAN segmentation in a network. In addition, you will learn about
the advantages and disadvantages of using bridges, switches, and routers for
LAN segmentation and the effects of switching, bridging, and routing on
network throughput. You will also learn about Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and
VLANs, and the benefits of these technologies. In the final part of the course
you will learn the IP protocol, subnetting, how to define an IP addressing plan,
the most widely used transport protocols TCP and UDP, the most important
applications such as e-mail, DNS, WWW, FTP, TELNET, and so forth.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:
- the basic technologies and services of data networks
- the most important standards and protocols currently used in data
networks
- the narrowband and broadband access technologies to data networks
- the basic technologies and services of LANs
- the most important standards and protocols currently used in LANs
