Book Description:

Nearly ten years after they published the first book devoted entirely to the Leydig cell, Matthew Hardy and Anita Payne have collaborated again to provide a comprehensive study of this fascinating and important cell type. The Leydig Cell in Health and Disease presents all of the developments in our understanding of Leydig cell biology and explores a wide variety of current and potential clinical applications. All aspects of Leydig cell biology, development, regulation, and physiology are explored in thirty-one expertly written chapters. The Leydig Cell in Health and Disease explores topics of great interest to the private sector, including the possible application of steroidogenesis discoveries to androgen synthesis or suppressing Leydig cell function as a key mechnanism in the development of a male contraceptive. This in-depth volume is an invaluable resource for information on the science and application of Leydig cell biology and function.

Book Description:
Distinguished clinician-scientists describe in concise studies their most difficult cases and reveal what they did, how they did it, and why. The cases cover a wide range of endocrine problems. Each case study reviews how the patient was managed, details the reasons why various tests and treatments-many only recently available-were carried out, and provides references to ensure that those novel methodologies can be easily translated into the endocrine specialist’s daily practice. The authors provide practical solutions for these difficult-to-manage cases, and successfully apply knowledge fresh from the laboratory to decisions about patient management. Practical and stimulating, Challenging Cases in Endocrinology demonstrates for every clinical endocrinologist precisely how specialists approach their most challenging cases and how these approaches can be effectively applied in the daily practice of endocrinology.

Book Description:

Neuroplasticity, Development, and Steroid Hormone Action explores the effects of steroid hormones on brain development, function, and aging and is a compilation of cutting-edge research of concern to the disciplines of neurobiology, neuroendocrinology, endocrinology, and developmental biology. The experimental approaches covered range from molecular to behavioral and endocrine to neurobiological. The authors are noted neurobiologists and active researchers from the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Divided into five sections and containing scientific photographs, line drawings, tables, color illustrations, and graphs, this interesting and timely text covers the neuroplastic effects of steroid hormones throughout the lifetime of various animal models, such as bees, fish, lizards, turtles, birds, mice, rats, and primates. These sections focus on: Ÿ The development and differentiation of neuroendocrine systems Ÿ Steroid dependent brain differentiation Ÿ The central regulation of hormone secretion Ÿ Steroid hormones and neuroplasticity in the mature brain Ÿ Steroid mediated mechanisms of cell growth and survival

Review
"?recommended for all professionals with an interest in this field?the book features many suggestions of practical value." (E-STREAMS, September 2005)

"...a great reference book, is clearly laid out, offers practical guidance and is a very interesting read..." (Practical Diabetes International, Vol 22 (6) July 2005)

Book Description
Obesity has become the most common chronic disease of the present day, with significant increases in prevalence in populations across the world and all age groups. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular complications, making it an important public health issue. Type 2 diabetes associated with obesity or 'diabesity' is today the most common form of type 2 diabetes. It is also associated with a number of other cardiovascular risk factors which constitute the metabolic syndrome. Effective management of 'diabesity' is crucial to the reduction of morbidity and premature mortality due to cardiovascular disease. This book comprises chapters written by leading international experts on various aspects of obesity-related diabetes. It will serve as a practical reference guide suitable for all professionals with an interest in this field. The early chapters cover topics ranging from the changing epidemiology of type 2 diabetes to an analysis of the principal causes of the metabolic syndrome. Emerging problems such as childhood 'diabesity' and the impact of obesity on polycystic ovary syndrome will be of interest not only to paediatricians and endocrinologists, but also to general practitioners and other healthcare professionals. The contemporary approach to the clinical assessment of obesity and its management in both primary and secondary care settings is described. The book features many suggestions of practical value.

Book Description
The result of insufficient action of insulin is an increase in blood glucose concentration (hyperglycaemia). Many other metabolic abnormalities occur, notably an increase in ketone bodies in the blood when there is a severe lack of insulin. False results may also occur if the patient has been ill recently or has had prolonged bed rest. Gestational diabetes This term embraces the criteria for both diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance when discovered during pregnancy (see page 80). Glucose tolerance tests may also show: Renal glycosuria?this occurs when there is glycosuria but normal blood glucose concentrations; this is a benign condition, only rarely indicating unusual forms of renal disease. Patients are managed at the discretion of the physician.
