    Paperback: 471 pages
    Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (October 4, 2007)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 140206683X

    Product Description

    Few, if any, fundamental disciplines in the earth sciences have seen so many dramatic changes and developments as stratigraphy. The discipline has come to be applied progressively, and indispensably, to nearly all branches of the earth sciences, including such endeavors as charting the course and complexities of life evolution through time, understanding how ancient ecosystems developed and operated, and furnishing data pivotal to exploration and exploitation of strategic mineral resources.

    This book aims to incorporate major aspects and essential elements underpinning the modern applications and perspectives of stratigraphy. It focuses on traditional and innovative techniques and how these can be utilized in reconstructing the geological history of sedimentary basins and in solving manifold geological problems and phenomena. Each chapter summarizes contributions by leading researchers in the field. It is hoped that this book will provide the reader with key insights into all these aspects and applications.

    Proxies in Late Cenozoic Paleoceanography
    by Hillaire-Marcel (Author), C. Hillaire-Marcel;Anne de Vernal (Editor)

    [IMG]

    Hardcover: 862 pages
    Publisher: Elsevier Science (July 6, 2007)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 0444527559
    ISBN-13: 978-0444527554

    Book Description
    An up-to-date account of the methodologies used for the measurement and interpretation of tracers and proxies in deep sea sediments

    Product Description
    The present volume is the first in a series of two books dedicated to the paleoceanography of the Late Cenozoic ocean. The need for an updated synthesis on paleoceanographic science is urgent, owing to the huge and very diversified progress made in this domain during the last decade. In addition, no comprehensive monography still exists in this domain. This is quite incomprehensible in view of the contribution of paleoceanographic research to our present understanding of the dynamics of the climate-ocean system. The focus on the Late Cenozoic ocean responds to two constraints. Firstly, most quantitative methods, notably those based on micropaleontological approaches, cannot be used back in time beyond a few million years at most. Secondly, the last few million years, with their strong climate oscillations, show specific high frequency changes of the ocean with a relatively reduced influcence of tectonics. The first volume addresses quantitative methodologies to reconstruct the dynamics of the ocean andthe second, major aspects of the ocean system (thermohaline circulation, carbon cycle, productivity, sea level etc.) and will also present regional synthesis about the paleoceanography of major the oceanic basins. In both cases, the focus is the "open ocean" leaving aside nearshore processes that depend too much onlocal conditions. In this first volume, we have gathered up-to-date methodologies for the measurement and quantitative interpretation of tracers and proxies in deep sea sediments that allow reconstruction of a few key past-properties of the ocean( temperature, salinity, sea-ice cover, seasonal gradients, pH, ventilation, oceanic currents, thermohaline circulation, and paleoproductivity). Chapters encompass physical methods (conventional grain-size studies, tomodensitometry, magnetic and mineralogical properties), most current biological proxies (planktic and benthic foraminifers, deep sea corals, diatoms, coccoliths, dinocysts and biomarkers) and key geochemical tracers (trace elements, stable isotopes, radiogenic isotopes, and U-series). Contributors to the book and members of the review panel are among the best scientists in their specialty. They represent major European and North American laboratories and thus provide a priori guarantees to the quality and updat of the entire book. Scientists and graduate students in paleoclimatology, paleoceanography, climate modeling, and undergraduate and graduate students in marine geology represent the target audience. This volume should be of interest for scientists involved in several international programs, such as those linked to the IPCC (IODP - Integrated Ocean Drilling Program; PAGES - Past Global Changes; IMAGES - Marine Global Changes; PMIP: Paleoclimate Intercomparison Project; several IGCP projects etc.), That is, all programs that require access to time series illustrating changes in the climate-ocean system.

    * Presents updated techniques and methods in paleoceanography
    * Reviews the state-of-the-art interpretation of proxies used for quantitative reconstruction of the climate-ocean system
    * Acts as a supplement for undergraduate and graduate courses in paleoceanography and marine geology

    Mine Water Hydrogeology and Geochemistry
    (Special Publication)

    by Paul L. Younger (Editor), N. S. Robins (Editor)

    [IMG]

    Hardcover: 408 pages
    Publisher: Geological Society of London (September 2002)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 1862391130
    ISBN-13: 978-1862391130

    Product Description
    This book is a collection of keynote reviews and detailed case-studies covering the principal areas of active research and state-of-the-art industrial practice in the field of mine water management. It addresses both issues of water quantity (such as the impact of longwall mining on the piezometry and hydraulic properties of overlying aquifers) and water quality (spanning an array of sites from deep coal mines to open-pit base metal mines), as well as a wealth of hybrid, integrated studies in which hydrogeological and geochemical aspects are considered (and managed) together. The papers presented in this book are intended for practising geologists and engineers involved in the management of active and abandoned mine sites all over the world. It is also of interest to academic geoscientists and students with interests in low-temperature aqueous geochemistry and the hydrogeology of complex, quasi-karstic groundwater flow systems.

    Geology and Habitability of Terrestrial Planets
    (Space Sciences Series of ISSI)

    by Kathryn E. Fishbaugh (Editor), David J. Des Marais (Editor), Oleg Korablev (Editor), Phillipe Lognonné (Editor), François Raulin (Editor)

    [IMG]

    Hardcover: 306 pages
    Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (November 28, 2007)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 0387742875
    ISBN-13: 978-0387742878

    Product Description

    Given the fundamental importance of and universal interest in whether extraterrestrial life has developed or could eventually develop in our solar system and beyond, it is vital that an examination of planetary habitability goes beyond simple assumptions such as, "Where there is water, there is life." This book has resulted from a workshop at the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland (5-9 September 2005) that brought together planetary geologists, geophysicists, atmospheric scientists, and biologists to discuss the multi-faceted problem of how the habitability of a planet co-evolves with the geology of the surface and interior, the atmosphere, and the magnetosphere.

    Each of the six chapters has been written by authors with a range of expertise so that each chapter is itself multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, and accessible to scientists in all disciplines. These chapters delve into what life needs to exist and ultimately to thrive, the early environments of the young terrestrial planets, the role of volatiles in habitability, currently habitable (but possibly not inhabited) geologic environments, the connection between a planet's inner workings and the habitability of its surface, and the effects on planetary atmospheres of solar evolution and the presence or absence of a magnetosphere.

    This book serves as a useful reference for those who plan missions that will hunt for biomarkers (especially on Mars), for biologists and geoscientists who seek a broader view of the story, and for researchers and upper level students interested in an in-depth review of the geologic evolution of terrestrial planets, from their cores to their magnetospheres, and how that evolution shapes the habitability of the planetary surface.

    Review

    ...the papers provide an interesting insight into some of the important developments in Earth Science in the last fifty years. Episodes B. Windley

    Product Description
    An interesting volume presenting the papers collected for the Festschrift "Paradoxes in Modern Geology" in honor of Professor Ken Jinghwa Hsu on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

    Paradox, as defined in a dictionary, is a statement contrary to accepted opinion. That a broad discussion of paradoxes is fruitful for the advancement of science in general, and geosciences in particular, has been amply demonstrated by Professor Hsu throughout his distinguished career. Not only has he propelled the geoscience community forward with his controversial statements, a number of his former students, who are currently in key positions at universities and in industry, are influencing in a similar open minded way the present day thinking. The wide scope this reasoning encompasses is demonstrated by the contributions to this book, delineating paradoxes and problems in the fields of tectonics, basic and applied geosciences, petrology, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and paleogeography, kinematics and modelling.

    Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (October 11, 2005)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 0387283226
    ISBN-13: 978-0387283227

    Product Description

    This volume contains articles from the 20th Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments and Water. Primarily a technical conference, each year the platform sessions, poster presentations, and workshops represent the leading edge in environmental science and technology. The meeting promotes a collaboarative approach between scientists, engineers, environmental consultants, industry, and regulators dealing with environmental contamination.

    This yearly conference began 21 years ago to inform the environmental remediation efforts of the DEP and the EPA. What started as a group of Academics providing informal assistance to the EPA is now an international conference that presents current research with the support of a high level scientific advisory board. The conference follows trends and adapts the conference agenda accordingly. The largest ever attendance at the 2004 meeting was at nearly 1000 due to the caliber of the researchers and engineers presenting at the conference. Hardcover: 560 pages
    Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell; 1 edition (August 3, 2007)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 1405169346
    ISBN-13: 978-1405169349

    Product Description

    This volume on continental margin sedimentation brings together an expert editorial and contributor team to create a state-of-the-art resource. Taking a global perspective, the book spans a range of timescales and content, ranging from how oceans transport particles, to how thick rock sequences are formed on continental margins.

    * Summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes
    * Explores timescales ranging from particle transport at one extreme, to deep burial at the other
    * Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey), enabling detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy
    * Includes observational studies which document the processes and strata found on particular margins, in addition to numerical models and laboratory experimentation, which provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental-margin sedimentation
    * Provides a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient margins, and an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy.

    Book Description
    Continental Margin Sedimentation: From Sediment Transport to Sequence Stratigraphy is designed to provide a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient continental margins, and to be an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy. It summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes. The contents deal with time-scales ranging from particle transport at one extreme to deep burial at the other. Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey). These two examples allow detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy. Observational studies document the processes and strata found on particular margins, and numerical models and laboratory experimentation provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental margin sedimentation.

    Product Description

    Ice, Rock, and Beauty is a book for anybody who lives in the solar neighborhood, and takes an interest in its significance to us as residents.

    Human experience of the Solar System is changing rapidly. Techniques of observation from Earth-based telescopes continue to develop, while missions such as Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, and the Hubble Space Telescope have yielded many stunning images.

    So although most people have some knowledge of the essential structure of the Solar System, relatively few are familiar with the amazing diversity of objects that travel with and amongst the planets in their journeys around the Sun.

    The book gathers images from a rich pool, many from national and international organizations such as NASA and ESA, some directly from academic astronomers, and a few from private individuals. Together they tell a story of the Solar System, and of its beauty, that has not been told before.

    • Structure: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the endogenic agencies of tectonic and volcanic processes, geological structures, and rock types.

    • Process and form: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the exogenic agencies of weathering, running water, flowing ice and meltwater, ground ice and frost, the wind, and the sea.

    • History: Earth surface history, giving a discussion of Quaternary landforms and ancient landforms, including the origin of old plains, relict, exhumed, and stagnant landscape features, and evolutionary aspects of landscape change.

    Fundamentals of Geomorphology provides a stimulating and innovative perspective on the key topics and debates within the field of geomorphology. Knowledge Cartography: Software Tools and Mapping Techniques
    (Advanced Information and Knowledge Processing) By Alexandra Okada, Simon J. Buckingham Shum, Tony Sherborne

    [IMG]

    * Publisher: Springer
    * Number Of Pages: 400
    * Publication Date: 2008-09-05
    * ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1848001487
    * ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781848001480
    * Binding: Hardcover

    Product Description:

    Knowledge Cartography is the discipline of mapping intellectual landscapes.

    The focus of this book is on the process by which manually crafting interactive, hypertextual maps clarifies one’s own understanding, as well as communicating it.

    The authors see mapping software as a set of visual tools for reading and writing in a networked age. In an information ocean, the primary challenge is to find meaningful patterns around which we can weave plausible narratives. Maps of concepts, discussions and arguments make the connections between ideas tangible and disputable.

    With 17 chapters from the leading researchers and practitioners, the reader will find the current state–of-the-art in the field. Part 1 focuses on educational applications in schools and universities, before Part 2 turns to applications in professional communities, but with many cross-cutting themes:

    • conceptual frameworks for understanding knowledge cartography

    • visual languages, many of which work on both paper and with software

    • specialist software, much of it freely available and open source

    • case studies reflecting on successes and failures

    • ways in which maps can be used both effectively and ineffectively

    • examples of how to evaluate maps

    • visit the website for updates on the field, and extra resources for each chapter:

    Knowledge Cartography will be of interest to learners, educators, and researchers in all disciplines, as well as policy analysts, scenario planners, knowledge managers and team facilitators. Practitioners will find new perspectives and tools to expand their repertoire, while researchers will find rich enough conceptual grounding for further scholarship.
