    * Publisher: Wiley
    * Number Of Pages: 918
    * Publication Date: 2007-06-15
    * ISBN / ASIN: 0471929638
    Book Description:
Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control is the long-awaited sequel to Stuart Warren’s bestseller Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, which
looked at the planning behind the synthesis of compounds. This unique book now provides a comprehensive, practical account of the key concepts
involved in synthesising compounds and focuses on putting the planning into practice. The two themes of the book are strategy and control: solving
problems either by finding an alternative strategy or by controlling any established strategy to make it work. The book is divided into five sections that deal
with selectivity, carbon-carbon single bonds, carbon- carbon double bonds, stereochemistry and functional group strategy. * A comprehensive, practical
account of the key concepts involved in synthesising compounds
    * Takes a mechanistic approach, which explains reactions and gives guidelines on how reactions might behave in different situations
    * Focuses on reactions that really work rather than those with limited application
    * Contains extensive, up-to-date references in each chapter
Students and professional chemists familiar with Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach will enjoy the leap into a book
designed for chemists at the coalface of organic synthesis

    Nitrogen Fixation at the Millennium
    By
    * Publisher: Elsevier Science
    * Number Of Pages: 470
    * Publication Date: 2002-11-01
    * ISBN / ASIN: 0444509658
    Book Description:
The turn of the millennium from the twentieth to the twenty-first century provides an occasion to review our understanding of a biological process,
biological nitrogen fixation, that is of prime importance for the continued survival of mankind. This process has provided a basis for maintaining soil fertility
since the beginning of organised agriculture, yet its very existence was confirmed only just over a century ago. In the intervening years, an enormous
intellectual effort has dispersed much of the mystery surrounding biological nitrogen fixation. Biological fixation is widely exploited in agriculture, as are
nitrogen fertilisers prepared for the last hundred years under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. However, despite all our efforts, the
fundamental nature of the reactions involved at the heart of the biological process remain unknown.
This book aims to describe what we have learned in the last one hundred years or so about biological nitrogen fixation, about what its chemistry appears to
be, and how it is applied in agriculture. This ambitious objective has not been attempted recently. It is aimed at students and those who wish to enter these
very challenging areas of research, and who need to learn the state of the art at the turn of the millennium. The authors are all acknowledged world experts
in their fields. They have prepared concise, well referenced and authoritative accounts of their subjects. This book provides a unique summary of the
current state of knowledge that will be indispensable to all students and researchers, actual and potential, interested in biological nitrogen fixation

    Cement chemistry--authoritative, comprehensive...excellent!
The most authoritative book there is for novice and specialist chemists and material scientists in the field of cement chemistry. H.F.W. Taylor, the pope in
the field of (applied) cement crystallography, writes clearly and concisely on a topic he has seen develop over the last half century. He demonstrates with
great clarity--through the "looking glass" that crystallography provides--how the complex subject of cement chemistry can be understood: how silicate and
aluminate cement phases are produced, how they behave hydraulically and the ensuing structure and properties of the hardened materials. This book also
boasts a comprehensive bibliography of references, which have been skillfully screened to crystallise the most important literature contributions from the
abounding amount that has been produced in this field up to 1996--A needles in the haystack task, very well accomplished. This book is the most
comprehensive literature review on the subject

    Traceability in Chemical Measurement
Book Description: Metrological traceability of chemical measurement results means the establishment of a relation to metrological stated references through an
unbroken chain of comparisons. This volume collects 56 outstanding papers on the topic, mostly published in the period 2000-2003 in the journal "Accreditation
and Quality Assurance". They provide the latest understanding, and possibly the rationale why it is important to integrate the concept of metrological traceability
including suitable measurement standards such as certified reference materials, into the standard measurement procedures of every analytical laboratory. In
addition, this anthology considers the benefits to both the analytical
laboratory and the user of the measurement results.

    * Number Of Pages: 728
    * Publication Date: 2005
    ISBN / ASIN: 5484003520
The book considers computation technologies and methods for numerical simulation intended for solving the problems of improving the operational safety and
the efficiency of industrial gas pipeline networks. This approach is based on modern methods of computational mechanics and mathematical optimization. The
application of these methods and technologies is aimed at an integrated assessment of the state of the gas pipeline networks of industrial enterprises and the
creation of efficient safe modes for their operation. These methods can be applied both at the stage of a pipeline network’s design and at the stage of its
operation. They allow for the development of dangerous malfunctioning of a pipeline network. They can be of use for development and efficiency analysis
concerning anti-terrorist activities at big industrial energy plants. Practical applications of computation technologies and methods of numerical simulation are
illustrated with examples of solving industrial problems for gas industry enterprises. The authors demonstrate the efficiency of these technologies and the
methods for improving the safety of the oil pipeline networks serving thermal power stations.
The book is intented for scientists and engineers who deal with the design of pipeline networks, the analysis of their actual state, pipeline network insurance and
control, improving theirindustrial safety and environmental friendliness, in the context of a wide range of environment-oriented measures. The material is also
comprehensible to graduete students in technical high schools

This course on nuclear physics leads the reader to the exploration of the field from nuclei to astrophysical issues. Much nuclear phenomenology can be
understood from simple arguments such as those based on the Pauli principle and the Coulomb barrier. This book is concerned with extrapolating from such
arguments and illustrating nuclear systematics with experimental data. Starting with the basic concepts in nuclear physics, nuclear models, and reactions, the
book covers nuclear decays and the fundamental electro-weak interactions, radioactivity, and nuclear energy. After the discussions of fission and fusion leading
into nuclear astrophysics, there is a presentation of the latest ideas about cosmology. As a primer this course will lay the foundations for more specialized
subjects. This book emerged from a series of topical courses the authors delivered at the Ecole Polytechnique and will be useful for graduate students and for
scientists in a variety of fields

The Committee on Nuclear Physics was established by the Board on Physics and Astronomy as part of its decadal survey series, Physics in a New Era. The
committee met four times over the course of a year. It heard from program managers at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science
Foundation (NSF) and solicited input from the nuclear physics community through the American Physical Society ’s Division of Nuclear Physics. A set of peer
readers who were asked by the committee to read the draft report (J. Friar, G. Garvey, K. Gelbke, E. Henley, B. Holstein, and R. Holt) provided valuable
perspectives, and their comments had an influence on the report. The comments of the reviewers of the report (see page ix) also provided useful input. The
committee would like to thank both groups for their time and help. In addition, the list of individuals who helped with material for the report in a variety of ways is
too long to enumerate, and the committee wishes to express its gratitude for this assistance. As part of the physics survey, the overall objective of the study was to
help the general public, the government agencies concerned with the support of science, Congress, and the physics community to envision the future of this field

Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over
the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject,
turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it
had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning
enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry text applies to McMurry: it works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's
coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The
primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that students who are not yet versed in the
subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why. Within this primary organization, the author
places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. Currently in use at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the
United States and Canada, McMurry's ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is also an international bestseller from the United Kingdom to the Pacific Rim

    Publisher: Springer - 2004-12-08
    Hardcover | 1st Edition | 558 Pages | List Price: $259.00 (USD) | Sales Rank: 3788568
Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are at the forefront of advanced materials technology because of their light weight, high strength and toughness, high
temperature capabilities, and graceful failure under loading. During the last 25 years, tremendous progress has been made in the development and
advancement of CMCs under various research programs funded by the U.S. Government agencies: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA), Department of Defense (DoD), and Department of Energy (DOE).
Ceramic composites are considered as enabling technology for advanced aeropropulsion, space propulsion, space power, aerospace vehicles, and
space structures. CMCs would also find applications in advanced aerojet engines, stationary gas turbines for electrical power generation, heat
exchangers, hot gas filters, radiant burners, heat treatment and materials growth furnaces, nuclear fusion reactors, automobiles, biological implants, etc.
Other applications of CMCs are as machinery wear parts, cutting and forming tools, valve seals, high precision ball bearings for corrosive environments,
and plungers for chemical pumps. Potential applications of various ceramic composites are described in individual chapters of the present handbook.
Handbook of Ceramic Composites is different from the other books available on this topic. Here, a ceramic composite system or a class of composites has
been covered in a separate chapter, presenting a detailed description of processing, properties, and applications. Each chapter is written by
internationally renowned researchers in the field. The handbook is organized into five sections: Ceramic Fibers, Non-oxide/Non-oxide Composites, Non-
oxide/Oxide Composites, Oxide/Oxide Composites, and Glass and Glass-Ceramic Composites.
This handbook should be a valuable source of information for scientists, engineers, and technicians working in the field of CMCs, and also for designers
to design parts and components for advanced engines, and various other industrial applications

Materials are the foundation of technology. As such, most universities provide engineering undergraduates with the fundamental concepts of materials
science, including crystal structures, imperfections, phase diagrams, materials processing, and materials properties. Few, however, offer the practical,
applications-oriented background that their students need to succeed in industry.Applied Materials Science: Applications of Engineering Materials in
Structural, Electronics, Thermal, and Other Industries fills that gap. From a cross-disciplinary perspective that reflects both the multifunctionality of many
materials and the wide scope industrial needs, the author examines the practical applications of metal, ceramic, polymer, cement, carbon, and
composite materials across a broad range of industries. The topics addressed include electronic packaging, smart materials, thermal management,
nondestructive evaluation, and materials development. The text is clear, coherent, and tutorial in style, includes numerous up-to-date references, and
provides background material in a series of appendices.Unique in its breadth of coverage of both materials and their applications, Applied Materials
Science is both scientifically rich and technologically relevant. If you work or teach those that aspire to work in an engineering capacity, you will find no
text or reference that better prepares its readers for real-world applications of engineering materials

Thermodynamics of Systems Containing Flexible-Chain Polymers
    Summary:
This book deals with the problems of the thermodynamics of systems containing flexible-chain polymers as the basis of polymer material science. The
main thermodynamic quantities and concepts are introduced and discussed in the order of the objects getting more and more complicated: gases,
magnets, low-molecular-weight substances and mixtures, and finally, polymers and polymer blends.
All topics are considered in a common clue, using the principle of universality. The stability conditions for the one-phase state of multi-component
systems are given. Phase separation is regarded as a result of loss in stability. The critical state of a system, with the one-phase state being close to the
boundary of stability conditions breaking, is discussed in detail. The effects of both light scattering (elastic and dynamic) and diffusion, as directly
depending on the thermodynamic parameters characterizing the one-phase state stability, are considered in detail. One of the versions of colloid
scattering, namely, the turbidity spectrum method, is described as useful for the characterization of various heterogeneous structures and for the phase
analysis of polymer systems. In the approximation of mean field theories and advanced field theory, formalisms expound the following divisions of the
thermodynamics of binary and polynary systems with flexible-chain polymers: conformation of the polymer coil, composition fluctuations, elastic and
dynamic light scattering, diffusion in the one-phase state (including the critical range), phase separation, polymer fractionation, the coil-globule
transition, phase equilibrium and separation in the system network polymer + low-molecular-weight liquid, polymer blends and multiphase separation

Schäfer gives a concise overview of the static equilibrium properties of polymer solutions. In the first part diagrammatic perturbation theory is derived
from scratch. The second part illustrates the basic ideas of the renormalization group (RG). The crucial role of dilation invariance is stressed. The more
efficient method of dimensional regularization and minimal subtractions is worked out in part three. The fourth part contains a unified evaluation of the
theory to the one loop level. All the important experimental quantities are discussed in detail, and the results are compared extensively to experiment.
Empirical methods of data analysis are critically discussed. The final (fifth) part is devoted to extensions of theory. The first three parts of this book may
serve as the basis of a course. Parts four and five are hoped to be useful for detailed quantitative evaluations of experiments.

physical chemistry has been defined as that branch of science that is fundamental, molecular, and
interesting. I have tried to write a polymer textbook that could be described this way also. To the
extent that one subscribes to the former definition and that I have succeeded in the latter objective,
then the approach of this book is physical chemical. As a textbook, it is intended for students who
have completed courses in physical and organic chemistry. These are the prerequisites which define
the level of the book; no special background in physics or mathematics beyond what is required for
physical chemistry is assumed. Since chemistry majors generally study physical chemistry in the
third year of the undergraduate curriculum, this book can serve as the text for a senior-level
undergraduate or a beginning graduate-level course. Although I use chemistry courses and
chemistry curricula to describe the level of this book, students majoring in engineering, materials
science, physics, and various specialties in the biological sciences will also find numerous topics of
    interest contained herein.
Terms like "fundamental," "molecular," and "interesting" have different meanings for different
people. Let me explain how they apply to the presentation of polymer chemistry in this text.
The words "basic concepts" in the title define what I mean by "fundamental." This is the primary
emphasis in this presentation. Practical applications of polymers are cited frequently—after all, it is
these applications that make polymers such an important class of chemicals—but in overall content,
the stress is on fundamental principles. "Foundational" might be another way to describe this. I
have not attempted to cover all aspects of polymer science, but the topics that have been discussed
lay the foundstion—built on the bedrock of organic and physical chemistry—from which virtually
all aspects of the subject are developed. There is an enormous literature in polymer science; this
book is intended to bridge the gap between the typical undergraduate background in
polymers—which frequently amounts to little more than occasional "relevant" examples in other
courses—and the professional literature on the subject

    Publisher: Wiley-Interscience (April 11, 2003)
    Language: English
    ISBN: 0471202754
    Book Description
Laurence Belfiore’s unique treatment meshes two mainstream subject areas in chemical engineering: transport phenomena and chemical reactor
design. Expressly intended as an extension of Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot’s classic Transport Phenomena, and Froment and Bischoff’s Chemical Reactor
Analysis and Design, Second Edition, Belfiore’s unprecedented text explores the synthesis of these two disciplines in a manner the upper undergraduate
or graduate reader can readily grasp.
Transport Phenomena for Chemical Reactor Design approaches the design of chemical reactors from microscopic heat and mass transfer principles. It
includes simultaneous consideration of kinetics and heat transfer, both critical to the performance of real chemical reactors. Complementary topics in
transport phenomena and thermodynamics that provide support for chemical reactor analysis are covered, including:
Fluid dynamics in the creeping and potential flow regimes around solid spheres and gas bubbles
The corresponding mass transfer problems that employ velocity profiles, derived in the book’s fluid dynamics chapter, to calculate interphase heat and
    mass transfer coefficients
Heat capacities of ideal gases via statistical thermodynamics to calculate Prandtl numbers
Thermodynamic stability criteria for homogeneous mixtures that reveal that binary molecular diffusion coefficients must be positive
In addition to its comprehensive treatment, the text also contains 484 problems and ninety-six detailed solutions to assist in the exploration of the subject.
Graduate and advanced undergraduate chemical engineering students, professors, and researchers will appreciate the vision, innovation, and practical
application of Laurence Belfiore’s Transport Phenomena for Chemical Reactor Design.

Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry; 1 edition (April 2006)
    Language: English
    Book Description
Rising concern in recent years over the possible adverse environmental consequences of the use of chemicals has led to a steady increase in national
activity towards greater regulation, in addition to voluntary agreements with manufacturers for risk management of certain products. This book begins by
reviewing the current framework of legislation for the regulation of chemicals in the UK and then reports expert views on both the current situation and
possible future developments. Subsequent chapters consider some of the scientific and technical issues, including the evaluation of the risks which
chemicals can pose to human life and the environment, and the problems relating to evaluating the risks associated with metals in the environment.
Finally, the predictive methods used to model the behaviour of organic chemicals within the environment are described. Highly topical, and with
authoritative contributions from international experts, this book covers both the scientific underpinning and the legislative and practical issues of this
emotive subject. The detailed coverage of a topic that affects many sectors of industry and society will make it popular with a wide audience of
individuals from government organisations, industry or academic research - particularly those in environmental chemistry sectors

    Cycloaddition reactions
    ISBN: 3-527-30159-3
    Hardcover
    344 pages
    Size: 2.973 Mo
    January 2002
    Description
Cycloaddition reactions are among the most important tools for synthesis in organic chemistry, since these reactions are vital to the modern synthesis of
natural products and biologically active substances.
Metal catalysis plays an increasingly important role in these reactions, often allowing several stereocenters to be selectively created and integrated in
the target molecules. Kobayashi and Jorgensen's handbook provides numerous examples of metal-catalyzed reactions, including [2+1], [3+2] and [4+2]
cycloadditions. Important reactions such as carbo- and hetero-Diels-Alder, carbocyclic, cyclopropanation and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions are
discussed. A large number of experimental procedures gives a concrete idea of the use of metal-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions in modern synthesis.
The book is aimed at chemists in industry or academia, who want to effectively use cycloadditions in their work.
